Jackson and Ryder Fine Arts is pleased to announce its inaugural opening in 2012 with an exhibition of historically important photographs and archival quality reproductions from the collection of Luther T. Jackson (1928 - 1982). The first show will also includude images from art photographer Susan Borland, among others.

The collector, Luther T. Jackson, amassed hundreds of photographs chronicling a small southern town in Virginia from the mid to late 1800’s, to the mid-1970’s. He first published his collection as a book in 1976 and his late wife, Ernestine Clarke Jackson (1930 – 2011), went on to re-print the publication two more times.  The book, Phoebus: A Pictorial History, is an image rich history of a once vibrant small town. Phoebus is now part of a larger metropolitan area known as Hampton and Hampton Roads. The Phoebus Districct is currently seeing a revival as a destination for the performing and visual arts, plus high-end antique shops and an auction house. A newer and hipper nightlife is emerging as well.

Luther T. Jackson’s pioneering book helped lay the foundation for the town’s historical designation by the National Park Service, as the Phoebus Historic District, in its National Register of Historic Places directory.
